One type of avian survey that can be done with the very territorial Northern Goshawk (Accipiter
gentilis) is to use a call playback method. This
involves using the recorded call of a mature Goshawk to entice a nesting pair of Goshawks to defend
their nest. This allows the surveyor to
locate the nest so that all precautionary measures may be taken to ensure activities such as logging
and hauling of timber do not take place too
close to a nesting pair. A Goshawk nest is typically in the top branches of a large deciduous tree
such as the one below.
